Everyone loves sisig. Of all the sizzling plate dishes, I would argue that sisig is one of the best. This Kapampangan native makes use of all the pig parts you usually set aside. The result? Something extremely addictive! Sisig has grown in popularity over the years — and across the country, too! An absolute staple at restobars around the country, sisig has earned its spot in the Filipino Food Hall of Fame. But eating all that juicy pork can often come with a price — usually aimed at your health. Thankfully, this sizzling tofu sisig is a crispy, addictive, vegetarian way of enjoying one of your favorite dishes!

Love tofu? You aren’t the only one!

Tofu sisig isn’t the only dish wherein tofu has become the star of the show. With all the recent health crazes and desire to have a healthier diet, tofu is definitely a fantastic protein and great substitute for all your fatty meats. The different kinds of tofu are perfect for a wide repertoire of dishes. This makes it as versatile as it is delicious.

One of the most popular ways we Filipinos have come to use tofu is in none other than Tokwa’t Baboy. Just like our sizzling tofu sisig, this tokwa’t baboy makes use of crispy tofu cubes, combining it with our lean and juicy pork belly slices. This popular pulutan is also a regular at many Filipino restaurants, but it’s likewise a beloved side to hearty dishes like lugaw or congee. And just like our sizzling tofu sisig, it’s just as easy to make!

Another dish wherein the main protein is substituted for tofu is adobong sitaw. While usually ground beef or pork make an appearance in this dish, tofu makes an equally filling partner to sitaw, or string beans. Delicious and hearty, you can enjoy this adobong sitaw with tofu alongside a plate of fish, like bangus or galunggong. You’ll for sure be needing a lot of rice in order to really satisfy your cravings of this meal.

Whether it’s for its unique taste or many health benefits, tofu is sure to be your kitchen’s newest best friend. What do you like to make with your tofu?

How to Make Sizzling Tofu Sisig

In this sizzling tofu sisig, firm tofu and a mix of other ingredients come alive to bring a burst of flavors to each bite. Red bell peppers, bright and summery, add a different kind of crunch to your dish, and an equally unique flavor, too. Knorr Liquid Seasoning helps in giving your meal that extra umami flavor. Plus, Lady’s Choice Mayonnaise adds that creamy factor you can’t help but love. Are you the type to enjoy your pork sisig with a fried egg? You can do that as well with this tofu sisig! Cracking a sunny side up egg on top of your dish will truly bring everything together. However, egg or not, this tofu is definitely enjoyable either way.

Something you need to know about this tofu is its need to freeze overnight. This is to rid it of any of the liquid that it’s absorbed, drying it almost completely. To do so, press your tofu against a flat surface before zipping it in a resealable bag and throwing it in the freezer. The next morning, thaw your tofu, pressing it once more against a flat surface to remove your remaining liquid. After this, you can really begin working on your sizzling tofu sisig!

Heat a quarter cup of cooking oil in a pan, and fry your tofu until it’s golden brown and crispy. Flip it over to the opposite side, waiting for the same results, before removing it from the pan and heat. Chop your tofu into small cubes before you start on your dressing. The dressing is what gives your sizzling tofu sisig its umami, savory, and extraordinary flavors. To make it, you’ll need to combine half a cup of Lady’s Choice Mayonnaise and a tablespoon of Knorr liquid seasoning. Half a teaspoon of onion powder and a teaspoon of lemon juice later, mix your dressing ingredients well before setting them aside.

The next step in your sizzling tofu sisig would be to sauté your red onion slices until they’ve softened in your pan. Add the tofu and 2 tablespoons of liver spread before cooking the combination for about 1 minute. Then, add your red bell pepper and dressing mixture, coating all the ingredients well and evenly. The enticing and mouthwatering aroma of your sizzling tofu sisig makes this dish one appealing to all senses. But don’t worry — we’re almost done!

Heat a metal or sizzling plate, then add butter across it. Take your sisig and transfer it to said plate — don’t you just love that sizzle? Top it with green onions and an egg, if you choose, then serve it to your loved ones as an appetizer or main dish.
