Ginataang Salmon or Salmon sa Gata is a type of Filipino fish stew wherein salmon is used the main ingredient. The process involves stewing salmon in coconut milk mixture. Green leafy vegetables such as spinach can be added towards the end of the cooking process.

Any type of fish can be used to for this recipe. I utilized frozen salmon fillets for this demonstration. These were the ones that you can purchase from your local grocery store that were packaged in individual air-tight wraps. Make sure to thaw (defrost) it first before cooking. Salmon belly or even salmon head will work when used in this recipe. I mentioned in the video below that any fish variety of your choice can be used as a substitute to salmon. I have tried using boneless bangus, galunggong, and tilapia using this recipe. All of these instances went well.

Note that I am using a special coconut recipe mix for this recipe. It is called Knorr Ginataang Gulay Recipe Mix. This ingredient provides almost all the flavor to the dish. Notice that I did not use either salt nor fish sauce (patis)? I already got the flavors that I want for my ginataang isda. No need to add more, except probably for some ground black pepper to add a little zing to the dish.

Having green leafy vegetables on your Filipino ginataan dish is always a good idea. Spinach is the vegetable of my choice for this recipe. This is also what I had when I cooked ginataang tilapia. Malunggay leaves and hot pepper leaves are good alternatives to spinach.

Ginataang Salmon (Salmon in Coconut Milk) is best eaten with warm white rice. I love to have this meal for lunch. You can also cook it for dinner.

Yes, you can omit the Thai chili if you don’t want too much heat on your dish.
