How to Make Fajitas

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Fajitas are believed to have originated in Texas and Mexico before spreading throughout the world. They are meat-based dishes that are usually served on tortillas or tacos. Making fajitas involves grilling the meat first, adding vegetables and seasonings, and finally wrapping them in tortillas. Learn how to make fajitas in your kitchen with this useful tutorial.

How to Make Fajitas

Choosing Your Fajitas Ingredients

It is widely believed that fajitas were first made using skirt steak. This is a cut of beef that is sliced into strips also known as “faja”. Because skirt steak is challenging to find in many parts of the world, cooks began using other meats like chicken, seafood and pork. If you cannot find skirt steak at your butcher’s, tenderloin beef, chicken breasts and shrimp are the best alternatives.

To learn how to make fajitas, you also need tortillas or tacos. Tortillas can be made from either flour or corn. Many nutritionists agree that corn tortillas are the healthiest because they have more fiber, magnesium and potassium. Although flour tortillas are high in saturated fats, sodium and carbohydrates, they are rich in calcium and iron.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. beef chicken breasts or shrimp
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • ¼ cup lemon or lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for sauce
  • 1 onion sliced
  • 2 green or bell peppers
  • 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil for cooking
  • Low-carb tortillas or tacos

Instructions

  • Cut your choice of meat into strips. It is advisable to slice the meat against the grain to make it less chewy.
  • In a bowl, mix soy sauce, lemon/lime juice and olive oil. Marinate the meat strips in this sauce for 1-2 hours. Marinate the onions and peppers afterwards or in a separate bowl.
  • Add the olive oil for cooking to a skillet and heat it until it is hot. When oil is hot enough, it should start to ripple or shimmer.
  • Add and brown meat strips. When browned, remove from the pan and set aside. Add onions and peppers, sautéing them until soft. Add the meat back into the pan or skillet and heat through.
  • Serve the meat on tortillas or tacos, and garnish with salsa, cilantro. Guacamole and sour cream also tastes great in fajitas. If you want spicy, hot fajitas, you can add a teaspoon of chili powder to your soy sauce marinade.

Cooking Tips

It is a good idea to marinate the onions and peppers for a shorter time than the meat. Marinating vegetables for a long time can actually destroy their natural taste. Soak them in the marinade for 15 minutes tops. Making fajitas is a skillet is best for the novice, but with experience, you can cook your meat on a charcoal grill. Many cooks recommend adding mesquite chips to the coals to give fajitas a smoked flavor.
