Simple Easy Onion Rings

Choosing Your Ingredients

To learn how to make onion rings that are fluffy and scrumptious, you need plenty of onions, flour, eggs, milk and a lot of cooking oil. Onion rings don’t require much seasoning but you can add your blend of herbs and spices to spruce up the flavor. Many cooks also use breadcrumbs to make the rings extra crispy.

Onion rings can be fried in any kind of oil. However, if you are concerned about your weight or have a health condition, it is best to choose the healthiest. Olive oil is by far the healthiest oil you can use. The fats it contains are actually good for your heart health and can help lower high levels of bad cholesterol. The purest olive oil you can find is extra virgin, which can give your onion rings a bit of a fruity flavor.

  • 1 ¼ cup flour preferably all-purpose
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 whole egg
  • 1 cup milk whole or low-fat
  • Breadcrumbs as needed optional

Instructions

  • While you prep your onion rings, heat oil in deep skillet or pot. When oil starts to ripple or bubble, it is ready for frying.
  • Mix together the flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Take individual onion rings and add the flour mixture, coating well. Place the powdered onion rings on a clean baking sheet.
  • Slowly stir in the egg and milk into the flour mixture. Whisk to form a batter. Take the floured onion rings and dip them in the batter until coated. Set aside on a rack.
  • Pour breadcrumbs on an open dish or plate. Roll the batter-coated onion rings in the breadcrumbs. Shake off any excess crumbs and drop onion rings into hot oil to fry. Cook until golden brown, season with a dash of salt and serve.

How to Make Onion Rings Cooking Tips

Many first-timers learning how to make onion rings make the mistake of not dipping them in flour before the batter. Coating onion rings in flour first allows the batter to stick. Dipping in batter, in turn, helps breadcrumbs to cling to onion rings. The flour, batter and breadcrumbs are what give onion rings their crispy, fluffed up texture, look and taste.

Onion rings can be enjoyed with an unlimited number of dishes. They are especially enjoyable as a side dish for meat. They can also be used in sandwiches and burgers. Onion rings are vegetarian-friendly, which makes them an ideal addition to many meals.
